Is Freelance Writing A Good Career Choice

So, this is the most common question have in mind before starting off as a freelance writer. So is Freelancer Writing really good for your career?

Well, if you talk about the scope of freelance writing, there are some big opportunities in this niche.

The world is going online. Thousands of websites and blogs go live each day. Each of these websites and blogs will need fresh content that is not written anywhere on the world wide web.

A lot of these websites and blogs are handled by individuals and small businesses who cannot afford to hire full-time content writers. Therefore, these people prefer to hire freelancer content writers who can deliver the content as and when required.

And with the number of websites and blogs likely to increase exponentially, the demand for freelance content writers will also increase along with it.

However, freelance writing is not easy. You not only have to write content, but you also have to market your content writing services to people. Add to it, time management can be a huge hurdle if you are not a self-disciplined person.

So if you think you can find clients for your content and manage your time, freelance content writing would be the perfect option for you.

Writing content was never easy. And as I said, freelance content writing is tougher as you have to juggle between being a writer, a marketer, and an accountant. (Yes, you need to keep track of your income too)

So here are the 10 tips that will help you get rid of the hurdles and become a successful content writer.

1. Select Your Niche

First things first, you must decide your niche for writing content. Decide it for yourself whether you want to be a copywriter or content writer.

In any case, you also have to choose a specific topic for writing. Of course, you can write about health and smartphones at the same time, however, sticking to a particular topic will help you excel it and hence will require less research.

2. Create Your Portfolio

Most clients will ask you for sample articles that you have written before they hire you. So, you must make sure to create a portfolio of your work.

You can either create a word file to be sent to the client or start a blog for yourself. I highly recommend going with a blog because it is free to start. A blog also helps you to better organize your content.

3. Join Multiple Freelance Websites

There are several websites where you can find Freelancer Content writing jobs. I suggest registering with at least 3-4 such websites to maximize your chances of getting more work.

Few of the recommended sites are iWriter, Upwork, Guru and Fiverr.

4. Join Facebook Content Writing Groups

Facebook is another place where you can find content writing jobs. There are several groups of content writing where bloggers frequently post their requirements.

However, if you are working for a client through Facebook, make sure to have clear payment terms. If you are not sure about the authenticity of the client, you can always ask for an advance payment.

5. Work To Build A Portfolio

As a beginner, your focus should be on building a portfolio for yourself. If you are starting out, you can even offer free work to some reputed clients who you think can give you a lot of work in the future.

Working with famous bloggers and reputed websites will get you in the spotlight. Some of these bloggers will not mind if you link back to your work portfolio from your Author Bio. So, this will also ensure you get more work in a quick time.

6. Decide Your Pay Rates

Deciding your pay rates can be difficult if you are a beginner. Most clients prefer hiring experienced content writers and the ones who hire freshers want to hire them at throwaway rates.

So, you must decide yourself what is the minimum amount you need to survive the initial period of working a Freelance Content Writer.

The rates that you can get can vary greatly depending on your country. Folks from India work for as low as $3 per 1000 words while those in the USA stick to $5-$10 per 1000 words.

7. Use A Proofreader

As a human being, you are bound to make spelling, grammar an punctuation mistakes. Proofreading your content can be a pain.

You can use free chrome extensions like Grammarly to proofread your content as you type. This will help you save hours of work that you will otherwise spend to proofread your content each month.

I use the premium version of Grammarly to proofread articles on my blog. For more information on Grammarly, you can check my Grammarly Review

8. Make A Working Schedule

As I said earlier, you need to be very disciplined to be a freelance writer. You cannot afford to work as per your convenience.

You must have a fixed schedule for finding work, writing the content and also managing other stuff related to your project including interactions with the client etc.

9. Get Rid Of Writer's Block

Every writer suffers from a writer's block. However, if you are on your own with no one to monitor your activities, a writer's block can get worse and distract you from working.

So, you must work out a way to fight with the writer's block.

10. Set Up A Work Goal

You need a balance between work and personal life. So, you must set a practical goal of writing only a particular number of words each day depending on the time you take to research for each article.

Usually, a target of 2000-5000 words should fit most writers who want to deliver quality writing, earn decent money and also take out time for their family and friends.

Here's a bonus point to help you become a succsful freelance writer

11. Keep A Track Of Your Earnings

You must keep a track of money you make from content writing and the amount you spend for the same. The expenditures can include your internet bills, grammar checker subscriptions, costs for membership at freelance websites etc.

Keeping a track of your earnings will also help you to easily file your income tax returns.

Final Words

Freelance content writing can be difficult. However, if you follow these tips, things can become easier for you.

In fact, the above tips will be helpful to you not only if you are a beginner, but also if you are already an established freelance writer finding it difficult to cope up with work.

Hi Sitanshu, although you have a lot of experience in writing technical documentation, you will be relatively new to writing blogs with limited knowledge of SEO writing. So, most people will just treat you as a fresher.

As for your writing rates, you should stick to the rate that you find to be comfortable. Generally, in India, freshers charge anywhere between 20p to 40p per word. If I were in your place I would have tried to get 30-35p for the first few projects and then slowly increase the rates as more projects came my way.
